Energy
Energy. It’s a word used for many things. “My kid has way too much energy!”, “How will we make sustainable energy by 2050?”, “I don’t have the energy to deal with that”. Most of the time we use “energy”, we are talking about an inside feeling or level of power, desire, or activeness. A limited view that fails to capture the vibrational energy that is in and around us all the time.
One of the best times to feel how energy changes is around the seasons. This past weekend I spent a full day spring cleaning with my partner. We cleared out all the books, clothes, dust…the normal spring cleaning. The windows were open to exchange the stale, winter air with light, brisk spring air, the sun was shinning high in the sky, and we worked like busy bees inside. It did, in fact, feel like we were animals waking up from hibernation to stretch our legs and clear out the clutter we accumulated over the past year. Once our space was cleared of this clutter, not only did we feel like our energies had changed, we also felt like the energy of the room had changed to become livelier. Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up came to mind as I practiced yoga in my newly cleaned room.
On a more day-to-day basis, we all experience energies from other people, places, and situations. Those people who drain you, those people who motivate you. The happiness and alignment that you feel when you are in your favorite café. When you walk into a room where two people are arguing and you could cut the tension with a knife. You can feel the energy leave your lips as you speak kind words through a compliment or less kind words through an insult. The moment your thought has materialized and hangs in the air between you and the other person, you can sense a subtle shift in the conversation; if you are present and conscious and truly paying attention.
The truth is that we are energy in a universe of energy. Science calls this the electromagnetic field while other traditions have different names for it. As Ekhart Tolle would say, the labels don’t matter so much. You don’t need to understand it so much as to feel it and be aware of the energies within and around you.
How do we begin to harness and use this energy? I invite you to start just by being aware and noticing. Not judging. Not labelling good or bad. Just feeling. Like any mental exercises, it is a muscle that you need to train. As you begin to notice the energy you produce and the energy you surround yourself with, you naturally start to adjust and pivot into higher and higher vibrational energies that resonate with your own truth.
